Marina (Nina) Von Keyserlingk visits Holland

Nina von Keyserlingk was visiting the CowSignals training center in Bergharen in February 2011. She is a famous Cattle Welfare researcher from UBC Canada, together with Dan Weary. They promote more feed space per cow, based on research. Minimum 70 cm, and 90 cm for precalving and fresh cows. She also promotes more milk for young calves (up to 8 liter) and softer & larger beds for cows. We were visiting a few of our best designed barns and we were sharing ideas for new research.

Tie Stalls deep bed options with straw solutions in Switserland from CowSignals trainer Christian Manser.
Here are some interesting pictures and german text about Tie Stalls with deep straw in Switserland.

I have seen them work very well.  A testimonial from a Swiss farmers:  All my cows were resting at the same time, I never saw this before in the last 40 years in a tie stall barn...!!

I encourage you to start trying this on your farms. Start with the best managers.
It needs a minimum of 3 cleanings per day and we advice to have some extra air flow in the building (some small fans) to dry the beds and the air.

Kind regards,

Joep Driessen
